GUEST EXPERT: MS. KAETY JACOBSON

Ms. Kaety Jacobson, Oregon Sea Grant

Date of Webinar: February 2, 2017 at 7PM Eastern

Topic/Title: Engaging Stakeholders in marine research & policy: The art and science of outreach & Engagement

Description: We’ve likely all heard a story of stakeholders being against a project. These stories often get condensed down into quick explanations such as “They are NIMBY’s” (Not in My Backyard). These quick explanations often lack the contextual understanding of when and how these stakeholders were engaged in the process, and the quality of that engagement. How we communicate science and the methods we use to identify and engage stakeholders are often what most influences the results of the process, not the feelings or sentiment of each side. What is outreach? What is engagement? And why are they vital to the health of our oceans and coastal communities? These are just a few of the questions this presentation will go into.

Guest Expert Bio: Kaety Jacobson grew up in Newport, Oregon in a commercial fishing family. She has a bachelor’s degree from Oregon State University in Natural Resources and a Master’s degree from Nova Southeastern University in Coastal Zone Management. Kaety has been with the Oregon Sea Grant extension program for twelve years as a faculty member working on fisheries and coastal community issues throughout the West Coast. Kaety is an expert in outreach, engagement, process design, and facilitation. She works on a variety of issues from wave energy siting, to fishermen and vessel safety, collaborative research, and whale entanglements….to name a few.
