NOSB to host an Ask an Expert Google+ Hangout

Google-plus-hangouts-on-airThe National Ocean Sciences Bowl is excited to host a Google+ Hangout on Air on January 29th at 7pm EST that will allow competing students to “Ask an Expert” all their questions on the 2015 competition theme of “the science of oil in the ocean.”

We hope competing students will come to the Hangout with their questions as they prepare for their 2015 regional competitions. Experts from the NOAA Office of Response and Restoration will be providing the answers. Learn more about these experts:

Ken Finkelstein
Ken Finkelstein is an environmental scientist and has worked at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for eighteen years. Ken serves as a natural resource trustee and technical expert for both ecological risk assessments and natural resource damage assessments. Ken is also an adjunct professor of the Biology Department at Suffolk University and teaches courses in environmental science and oceanography annually.

Amy MacFadyen
Amy MacFadyen is a physical oceanographer. During the Deepwater Horizon/BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Amy helped provide daily trajectories to the incident command. Before moving to NOAA, Amy was at the University of Washington, first as a graduate student then as a postdoctoral researcher. Her research examined transport of harmful algal blooms from offshore initiation sites to the Washington coast.

Meg Imholt
Meg Imholt is a policy analyst. In this role she provides review of pending legislation, federal rulemakings, and reports related to response, restoration, and marine debris issues. Meg Imholt also manages requests from NOAA leadership, Congress, and stakeholders.

Details on how to join this Hangout:

January 29th, 7PM EST

If you have a Google account (.gmail email account), please log in and join the Hangout on Google+ through this link: Google+ Event page. On the right hand side of the screen you will have access to a Q&A box in which to enter your questions.  Please note, if you are not logged in to your Google account, or are joining from a mobile device, you will be able to see the questions, but not enter one yourself.

If you DO NOT have a Google account, please follow the Hangout through the NOSB’s You Tube page. You may enter any questions in the comments box.  A NOSB staff member will add any questions submitted through the comment box to the Hangout.

***IF YOU MISSED THE GOOGLE+ HANGOUT, YOU CAN VIEW THE RECORDING on the NOSB’s YouTube page!
